Is Silicone Safe? What to Know Before Using Silicone

Is silicone safe? If you’ve been trying to make your kitchen a little healthier, you’ve probably run into silicone.

It’s in spatulas, baking mats, food storage bags, ice cube trays, molds, and pretty much every kitchen product designed to be flexible. And honestly, I can see why it’s popular. Silicone is lightweight, easy to clean, reusable, and doesn’t shatter when you accidentally drop it.

You’ll find plenty of people online saying silicone is the perfect non-toxic alternative to plastic, while others make it sound like something you should never let near your food.

The truth is somewhere in the middle.

Silicone can be a really useful material for your kitchen, but I don’t think you need to treat it as an automatically “good” or “bad” material. What matters is the type of product you’re buying, how it’s made, and how you use it.

Here’s what I look at when deciding whether silicone makes sense for a kitchen product.


What Is Silicone, Exactly?

Silicone is a synthetic material made primarily from silicon and oxygen. Silicon itself is a naturally occurring element, but silicone is manufactured. Health Canada describes silicone as a synthetic rubber containing bonded silicon and oxygen. (The safe use of cookware and bakeware)

You’ll also see silicone described as a polymer or polysiloxane. Basically, those are terms describing the chemical structure of the material.

That structure gives silicone some pretty useful qualities. It can bend without breaking, handle relatively high temperatures, and be molded into all sorts of shapes. Which explains why it ended up taking over half the kitchen aisle.


Is Silicone Plastic?

No. Silicone and plastic are different materials with different chemical structures. But silicone also isn’t a natural material like wood, cotton, or glass.

I think this distinction is worth making because silicone sometimes gets marketed as a “plastic-free” alternative, which can make it sound like you’re replacing a synthetic material with something completely natural.

You’re not. You’re choosing a different type of synthetic material. That doesn’t make silicone bad. It just means I wouldn’t use “plastic-free” as shorthand for “natural” or “chemical-free.”


Is Silicone Safe for Food?

For food-contact applications, certain silicone materials are permitted under U.S. food-contact regulations when they’re used under the conditions specified for them.

The important part is particular uses. That doesn’t mean every silicone product you find online is automatically appropriate for every kitchen job.

A silicone spatula, baking mat, food storage bag, and random silicone gadget may all be made from silicone, but that doesn’t mean they have identical formulations, manufacturing standards, or intended uses. That’s why I pay attention to the actual product rather than stopping at the word “silicone.”


What Does “Food-Grade Silicone” Actually Mean?

You’ve probably seen “food-grade silicone” on everything from baking molds to reusable storage bags. Generally, it means the silicone is intended for use in applications where it will come into contact with food. But I wouldn’t treat “food-grade” like a magic certification that automatically makes a product perfect.

I still want to know:

  • Is the product specifically intended for food contact?
  • Does the manufacturer provide temperature limits?
  • Are the care instructions clear?
  • Is the company reputable?
  • Does the product description actually tell me what I’m buying?

What Is Silicone Made From?

This is where silicone can sound a little intimidating if you start reading ingredient lists.

Silicones are a class of materials built from siloxanes, which contain silicon and oxygen. One commonly used silicone is polydimethylsiloxane, or PDMS.

Silicone products can also contain other components depending on how they’re manufactured and what the finished product needs to do.

Health Canada has studied silicone bakeware because researchers wanted to better understand the potential migration of substances from silicone products during use. Their research has included siloxanes associated with silicone bakeware. (Investigating Silicone Bakeware is their Bread and Butter!)

That sounds alarming until you put it into context. The existence of a substance in a material doesn’t automatically mean the material is unsafe. What matters is things like how much can migrate, under what conditions, and whether the resulting exposure presents a health concern.

This is why I’m a little skeptical of blanket statements like “silicone contains chemicals, therefore silicone is toxic.” Technically, everything contains chemicals. That’s not a particularly useful way to evaluate a kitchen utensil.


What About Platinum-Cured Silicone?

If you’ve been shopping for higher-end silicone products, you’ve probably seen the phrase platinum-cured silicone.

Curing is part of the process used to turn silicone into the flexible material we actually use. Platinum-cured silicone uses a platinum-based catalyst during that process. You’ll often see it marketed as a premium option for food-contact products.

I don’t think it’s a bad thing to look for, but I also wouldn’t assume that “platinum-cured” automatically means one product is safer than every other silicone product.

The finished product, manufacturing quality, intended use, and applicable food-contact requirements still matter. Basically, don’t let one fancy phrase do all your shopping research for you.


Does Silicone Leach Into Food?

This is probably the question people are really asking when they ask whether silicone is safe. And unfortunately, the answer isn’t a neat little yes or no.

Food-contact materials can potentially release substances into food, depending on things like the material, the food itself, temperature, and how the product is used. Health Canada explains that substances can transfer from cookware and bakeware into food and that the conditions of use can affect that transfer. So I wouldn’t tell you that silicone never releases anything. But I also wouldn’t jump from that fact to “silicone is dangerous.” Those are two very different claims.

For me, the more useful question is whether the product is designed for food contact and whether I’m using it within the manufacturer’s recommended conditions.


Is Silicone Better Than Plastic?

Sometimes.

Silicone has a few advantages that make it useful in the kitchen. It’s flexible, reusable, and generally more heat-resistant than many common plastics. It’s especially handy when you need something that can bend, fold, or squeeze into a drawer without immediately becoming another piece of kitchen clutter. But I wouldn’t automatically call silicone a healthier choice simply because it isn’t plastic.

Utensils, food storage, drinkware, and cookware.

Pros

  • Extremely durable
  • Long-lasting
  • Easy to clean
  • Doesn’t break

Cons

  • Rigid
  • Can scratch
  • Not ideal for every cooking task

Wood

Cutting boards and certain kitchen utensils.

Pros

  • Natural material
  • Comfortable to use
  • Attractive enough to leave on the counter
  • Doesn’t conduct heat as readily as metal

Cons

  • Requires more care
  • Can absorb moisture
  • Usually shouldn’t go in the dishwasher
  • Needs to be dried properly

What Should You Look For When Buying Silicone?

If you’re shopping for silicone kitchen products, I wouldn’t just search for “best silicone” and grab the first thing with thousands of reviews.

A few things are worth checking first.

1. Make sure it’s intended for food contact

This sounds obvious, but it’s the first thing I’d check. A product should clearly be made for use with food rather than simply being made from silicone.

2. Check the temperature range

This matters most for things like baking mats, molds, and cooking utensils. Just because silicone is generally heat-resistant doesn’t mean every silicone product has the same temperature rating.

Health Canada currently recommends not using silicone bakeware above 220°C (428°F) and advises consumers to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. (The safe use of cookware and bakeware)

Your particular product may have a different stated limit, so always check the manufacturer’s instructions.

3. Buy from a reputable company

This is one of those boring pieces of advice that isn’t very Pinterest-worthy but is actually useful. I’d rather buy a silicone kitchen product from a manufacturer that clearly explains what it’s made for than a mystery product with a paragraph of vague safety claims.

4. Don’t get too caught up in “chemical-free”

I would skip this claim entirely when shopping. Silicone is a chemical material. So is water and literally everything else. What matters is which substances are present, how the product is intended to be used, and whether the product is appropriate for food contact.

5. Pay attention to the actual product

If a brand provides clear information about materials, temperature limits, care, and intended use, that’s useful. If the entire product listing is just: “NON-TOXIC!!! NATURAL!!! SAFE!!!” with no actual information behind those claims, I’m moving on.


When I Would Choose Silicone

There are quite a few kitchen products where silicone makes a lot of sense.

I’d consider it for:

  • Spatulas
  • Cooking utensils
  • Baking mats
  • Silicone molds
  • Reusable food storage bags
  • Ice cube trays
  • Products where flexibility is important
  • Situations where glass would be impractical because of breakage

It’s particularly useful when you want something flexible and reusable without having to worry about it shattering.


When I Would Choose Something Else

I don’t think silicone needs to replace everything in your kitchen.

For food storage, I usually like glass when weight and breakage aren’t an issue.

So, Is Silicone a Good Choice for a Healthier Kitchen?

I think it can be. But I wouldn’t buy something simply because the label says “silicone” or “non-toxic.”

I’d look at the whole picture:

  • What is it made for?
  • Is it intended for food contact?
  • What are the temperature limits?
  • Does the manufacturer provide useful information?
  • Is silicone actually the best material for this particular product?

That’s a much more realistic way to approach a healthier kitchen. You don’t need to throw out every plastic container you own and replace your entire kitchen overnight. You also don’t need to believe that every product labeled “non-toxic” is automatically a better choice.

Small, informed swaps are usually a much more reasonable place to start.


Final Thoughts

Silicone isn’t a natural material, but that doesn’t make it a bad material. Certain silicone and polysiloxane materials are authorized for specific food-contact uses under U.S. regulations.   • Proper use and care

And if silicone isn’t the best material for the job, that’s okay. Sometimes glass, stainless steel, or wood are better. A healthier kitchen isn’t about finding one perfect material. It’s about understanding your options and making choices that actually make sense for your home.
